Should I get an iPad or a Macbook?

My computer is getting old, its currently a dell inspiron from 2008 and its been running slowly. Today I uninstalled some programs to see if it would run faster, but it isn't. I have my whole life on that computer, so I'm a bit skeptical on getting a new one. I decided I am going to save for either a Macbook or an ipad, since I really have my heart set on an apple product. My friend has a Macbook and I adore it. I am not to crazy about the insane price. I currently have the droid 2 phone, so if I were to get an ipad, I would keep my phone (obviously) and possibly my computer as well. Which is better an ipad or a macbook?
